to stare blankly
blankly 的中文解釋是「茫然的」、「沒有表情的」，因此 stare blankly 即為「茫然地凝視」，說白一點就是「發呆」啦！
大亨小傳 The Great Gatsby 裡面有一句經典的話就用到了 stare blankly：
The loneliest moment in someone's life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly.
人生中最漫長的時刻，就是看著自己的世界正在崩解，但能做的卻只有茫然凝視。
When I saw her, she was just staring blankly at her computer screen.
我看到她的時候，她就只是看著電腦螢幕發呆。
to zone out
zone out 不會像 stare blankly 持續時間那麼久，通常 zone out 是指在一個短暫時間裡恍神發呆，比如你因為昨天晚上沒睡好，導致精神疲憊，所以別人講到一半時你失神，發呆了一下下，就可以用 zone out。
A: So anyway, as I was saying… Are you even listening to me?
A: 反正，我剛剛說… 你有在聽我說話嗎？B: Oh, sorry! I just zoned out for a second.
B: 噢抱歉！我剛剛出神了一下。
to be in a daze/trance
to be in a daze/trance 這種發呆情形通常是「茫然」、「恍惚」，就像小 V 有時候剛起床不久神智沒清醒，就會 in a daze 一段時間，尤其是假日無所事事的早晨。
A: What's wrong with him? He seems kind of off today.
A: 他怎麼了？他今天看起來心不在焉。B: I don't know. He's just been sitting there in a daze.
B: 我不知道耶！他就一直坐在那裡發呆。
to stare into space
stare 的意思為「凝視」，而 space 則表示「空間」，所以 stare into space 的發呆方式是「直視著前方放空」，例如唸書唸一唸覺得無聊，但還是堅持不放下書本，最後的結果就是 stare into space 直視著書發呆啦！除了 stare into space 之外，也可以說 look into space 或 gaze into space 哦！
He says he's studying, but look at him! He's just staring into space!
他說他在讀書，但看看他！他就只是在發呆嘛！
to drift off
drift 這個字本身是「漂流」的意思，而 drift off 用來形容發呆的話，就像是「思緒漂流」，無法專心於目前進行的事物，最常見的情形就是上課或演講很無聊的時候了！台上講者講他的，我在台下 drift off 我的！
This class is so boring. I'm trying to pay attention, but I keep drifting off.
這堂課好無聊，我一直嘗試專心，但還是不斷發呆。
